Independent Living Skills at The Levels School

This course is designed to give students a firm foundation in key areas of independent life, covering food and nutrition, banking and finance, household care and maintenance. This is a very flexible, non-exam centred course based on student need. We take into account all aspects of the EHCP and work on building confidence, encouraging self-care in an atmosphere of growth and support.

The content maximises the fully equipped, home style kitchen and utility room facilities in the school. We currently run four lessons a week, including one practical lesson. The students may also opt to improve study skills, revise, or complete extra work under teacher supervision.

Holiday Activities

If you're looking to support your child's independent living skills at home, try the following activities:

  • Online grocery shopping – help with ordering food and selecting the best value or quality of a product helps our students learn about the cost of household groceries and making informed choices.

  • Laundry – enabling a young adult to learn how to use your washing machine, how to take care of their clothes and help with household laundry

  • Create a picnic – organise a balanced, nutritious menu and prepare foods safely. Pack food and utensils appropriately and then enjoy on a family outing or in the garden.
