In Key stage 2 we value the importance of ensuring all our pupils have a daily phonics session – this is delivered through a ‘Word of the day’ approach linked to Sounds – Write Reading and Spelling Programme and follows the same phonic progression. An initial diagnostic assessment is completed at the beginning of the year to inform any gaps in phonetics, which aids planning. ‘The Word of the day’ is explored – through the sound being taught, reading the word, generating additional words, writing the word, putting the word into a sentence plus alternative spellings of the phoneme. We ensure that any gaps in phonetical understanding are covered during Years 5 & 6 and revisited and consolidated through other subject areas.
